Doug Fankell

Structural Integrity

Douglas P. Fankell, Ph.D., is an engineer at Structural Integrity Associates where he applies his expertise in advanced finite element analysis (FEA) to challenging problems in biomedical device design.

He recently completed his doctorate at the University of Colorado which he earned by developing a large deformation, non-linear, thermo-poromechanics finite element code for the Advanced Medical Technologies Laboratory (AMTL). At the AMTL he conducted experiments and inverse finite element analyses to determine biological material properties and developed predictive finite element models to aid in the design and understanding thermal tissue fusion surgical devices.

Doug specializes in challenging non-linear finite element analyses of complex and non-traditional engineering problems including analysis of biological-surgical tool interactions and missile impact analysis. He has extensive experience in a wide range of commercial FEA programs including and writing custom finite element software. He has expertise in the non-linear, large deformation mechanics of multi-phasic materials, especially soft biological tissue, hyperlastic materials, and composite materials.

Additionally, Doug has conducted complex structural and fluid dynamics analysis of a planetary centrifuge designed to separate blood into its components at 2000G for Terumo BTC and during his time at the University of Colorado, he spent 3 months developing detonation shock dynamics code at Los Alamos National Laboratory to simulate detonation of high explosives. Doug also earned a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California – Berkeley where he focused in structural dynamics and mechanics of materials.
